In December 2020, SAFE and several community members filed a lawsuit against the City of Selah, its Mayor, and its City Administrator, challenging actions that infringed upon our First Amendment rights. The lawsuit addressed the city’s erasure of chalk messages and removal of signs supporting racial equity.
SAFE
From Protest to Purpose
In the summer of 2020, Selah residents came together to express solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and advocate for racial justice. What began as peaceful demonstrations, including sidewalk chalk messages and signs promoting equality, was met with resistance from city officials. Chalk art was erased, signs were removed, and voices were silenced.
In response, we formed the Selah Alliance for Equality (SAFE) — a grassroots coalition committed to equity, inclusion, and community safety in Selah and the Yakima Valley. Our mission is to ensure that every resident feels seen, heard, and valued.

Building an Inclusive Community
With the settlement funds, SAFE has embarked on projects aimed at fostering inclusivity and celebrating diversity in our community. One of our proudest achievements is the completion of a 300-foot mural on North First Street — the longest in Washington State — depicting a diverse group of individuals and symbols from various cultures.
Additionally, we have established a scholarship program to support underrepresented youth in pursuing higher education, investing in the future leaders of our community.
